I'm surprised a lot of people are suggesting a glossy ceramic.  The reason I picked the travertine is not because I love rustic tiles (if I had designed the kitchen from the beginning it would look far different) but because everything in the kitchen is so glossy- the countertop, the appliances, the cabinets- I thought it would add some texture and contrast.  To my surprise, they were also the most appealing to me when I went to Home Depot and looked at the tiles.  Do you think the tiny tiles are going to look dated later on?  I just really liked them on display.[/quote]

Get a matte finish.

I think the tiny stone tiles will look dated soon. We did them in our old kitchen 10 years ago.
