It brings out the color of the cabinets nicely, and it functions as sort of an "accent" color because the two adjoining rooms (family room and sunroom) are open to it and a shade of beige, so it adds a little pop of color. The rooms are also all southern-facing, so it is a very bright space no matter the color- I could paint everything dark grey and it would still look bright. Here is my inspiration kitchen, which I am amazed I can still find 3 years after I painted:

I'm surprised a lot of people are suggesting a glossy ceramic. The reason I picked the travertine is not because I love rustic tiles (if I had designed the kitchen from the beginning it would look far different) but because everything in the kitchen is so glossy- the countertop, the appliances, the cabinets- I thought it would add some texture and contrast. To my surprise, they were also the most appealing to me when I went to Home Depot and looked at the tiles. Do you think the tiny tiles are going to look dated later on? I just really liked them on display.
Get a matte finish.
I think the tiny stone tiles will look dated soon. We did them in our old kitchen 10 years ago.
