I flew Southwest with a lap infant recently. First you need to call them and add your baby to your trip. They want to know the child's age and birthdate. Then when you get to the airport you have to go to the counter and get the baby's boarding pass. Also, make sure you have a copy of the birth certificate or immunization records for proof of age. Have a good trip!
You don't need to call. We have flown about a dozen times with our 20 month old without a ticket for her, and have never called. Just flew last week - booked tickets and showed up at the airport, where you add her at check-in. They can be really strict about the birth certificate - we had a problem once when we lost the copy on the trip and they made a big fuss about the return. It totally depends on who is working though - some care more than others.
