I have had huge successes (for Father's Day) with making my DH a photo book of the past year with the kids.  For a 50th, I can imagine "the last 10 years" photo book or getting some childhood photos and doing the half-century photo book!

Or getting some childhood buddies flown in from his hometown as a surprise.  Or one friend.  If you are in the DCA, and his buddy has a family, maybe they come to see the DC sites and then have dinner with you or something.  Or you set up the friend and your DH with tickets to something.

Or, something with family.  Like my DH has one sibling (a brother).  Both families have kids; it would be nice to coordinate with my SIL and have the brothers be able to hang out without having to stop and do dad-duty; just be the two of them for a weekend.  I can see the toy soldiers being rolled out right now...

Another idea is somehow get his nuclear family together, if the parents are still around and the relationships are good.  Just get that nuclear family together and get out of the picture and let them be, with no in-laws or grandkids--a time trip into the past.

Obviously all this depends on the unique circumstances of your DH's relationships, but hope this sparks some ideas for you, OP.
