Even better, in my view, would be custom shoes. Or an heirloom-quality watch, engraved, that he can pass down to your son (or give to a SonIL), if you've been blessed with children.

I need ideas for my hubby's 50th also! He is so difficult to buy for - he dislikes clothes, gadgets, luxury items, spending money or traveling and I believe him that he doesn't want a party. In the past, when his family asks him for ideas he just "makes up" something (usually something practical he would have to buy anyway) and tells me he doesn't want anything...I never have any ideas to give them because I don't even have ideas for me to give him myself. Ugh.

my DH loves a bunch of things gadgety so that is something I'll be thinking about.

For experiences, if you haven't splurged for dinner/night/breakfast at Inn at Little Washington, we did that for our last anniversary and it checks off that box. It was fun! (But honestly, if you have a couple of friends that would go along, that would be better, because dinner is 3 hours long!)

I have had huge successes (for Father's Day) with making my DH a photo book of the past year with the kids. For a 50th, I can imagine "the last 10 years" photo book or getting some childhood photos and doing the half-century photo book!

Or getting some childhood buddies flown in from his hometown as a surprise. Or one friend. If you are in the DCA, and his buddy has a family, maybe they come to see the DC sites and then have dinner with you or something. Or you set up the friend and your DH with tickets to something.

Or, something with family. Like my DH has one sibling (a brother). Both families have kids; it would be nice to coordinate with my SIL and have the brothers be able to hang out without having to stop and do dad-duty; just be the two of them for a weekend. I can see the toy soldiers being rolled out right now...

Another idea is somehow get his nuclear family together, if the parents are still around and the relationships are good. Just get that nuclear family together and get out of the picture and let them be, with no in-laws or grandkids--a time trip into the past.

Obviously all this depends on the unique circumstances of your DH's relationships, but hope this sparks some ideas for you, OP.

I do not remember what I got for my 50th; probably shampoo....for my 49th, I was told I had metastatic cancer, and for 51, I got 3 cardiac stents and a pacemaker...

Once people get post Mid-life crisis, (at least me), experiences are more important than things. A weekend somewhere I wants to go would be good. I know I would love to go to a Nat's game with my friends for my birthday, but that can't happen....cursed december birthday.

I got mine a really cool vintage rugby shirt from the national team he roots for (he's European) and a great bottle of whiskey. He loved both. And I arranged for a mobile detailing company to come detail his car. Kind of pragmatic but he loved that too.
