Drug use is always a concern but opium use just makes a good fiction to post on DCUM and rile people up.
Agreed. I work tangentially with police and hear a lot about drug trends in the area. I have not heard anything about opium. Doesn't mean it's not happening. But I haven't heard about it. I have heard lots about heroin, though. Because of a significant number of recent overdose deaths, many police departments have done or are doing Narcan training. It's like an epipen for people overdosing on heroin. Maryland lost more people to heroin overdose deaths last year than to homicides. Kids initially get hooked on parents' prescription pills, but can't sustain it. So they turn to heroin, which is much cheaper. It's in every socioeconomic group. So definitely something to be aware of.
I have heard the same from friends who have kids of high school and college age in Northern Virginia. The Heroin epidemic is very real and on the rise. I know of several people from an affluent community who have gone to heavy duty rehab. Also, I recently read that Mexico is stepping up the growing of opium and production of heroin because marijuana sales have tanked thanks to its legalization in the USA.
