I have heard the same from friends who have kids of high school and college age in Northern Virginia. The Heroin epidemic is very real and on the rise. I know of several people from an affluent community who have gone to heavy duty rehab. Also, I recently read that Mexico is stepping up the growing of opium and production of heroin because marijuana sales have tanked thanks to its legalization in the USA.

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar (or a fake opium pipe is just a fake opium pipe). Obviously one or more bored GDS students decided to prank this site (surprisingly well known to students, by the way) with the post. It worked great, judging by the frantic responses.

I am a private school parent and the original poster of this particular thread. My question is this, if some teenager is posting a troll thread about drug use among their friendship group, should we as parents be concerned that he or she is projecting onto their fictitious thread an actual problem or concern? Or, should we assume that if their was a drug issue at certain schools, that we would know about it?

It appears that some persons want to bury their heads in the sand, and cry "troll" in order to shut down any legitimate discussion of this important issue. As a concerned parent, though, I would like to hear from other posters about whether you think that drug use is a concern for the local schools.

What's the likelihood this thread was started by the same person who started the other opium thread, maybe just from a different device to try to hide his tracks? I foresee a wave of other controversial threads being started in the next couple of weeks by the same person.

I appreciate that the DCUM Moderators have locked down the "Opium Problem" Thread, surmising from their analysis of post traffic and IP address (?) that the original post originated from a local private school, and therefore is likely a "Troll" post (or at least that is what I assume from the Moderators' note accompanying the lock).

In any case, given that there is often some kernel of truth in jokes or "troll" posts, and that the original post uses some specific slang associated with drug use, should we be concerned that an opiate problem does exist in the schools?

(As an aside, I do not know which I find scarier - that local students post "troll" threads about opiate use; or that the DCUM Moderators can so easily identify our posts' origination and identity despite it being "anonymous", they potentially have more dirt on us than the Feds).
