No, they don't have a 50/50 shot, the acceptance rate for in-state is more like 40%. The thing to consider about that, though, is that it's become so tough to get in that your average student in Northern Virginia, who 20 years ago would have had a pretty good shot at getting in, isn't even bothering to apply anymore. It's mostly top students applying, and still only 40% of them (or less in some counties) are getting in. If you want odds closer to 50/50, you have to move downstate. Like it said in the WaPo article, 92% of a recent freshman class was in the top 10% of their class. Does that really not sound competitive to you?

If you visit, the campus is lovely, especially the quad. Although we live in MD and we're hoping DC will go to UMD, the campus just doesn't match UVA's campus.

Besides rankings can somebody give a more organic view to why UVA is great?

It's very hard to get into. DD didn't get in, and she has great grades/scores. I think you need a hook, OOS, and DD didn't have one, aside from grades/scores.

The campus, designed by TJ, is lovely. I don't want DD going there, so it's for the best. It's very greek, kinda preppy, not quite the down to earth vibe that would suit DD. But it's a great school, so if your DC got in, congratulations!!

Wrong. Do you think it is comperable to say, the University of South Carolina or the University of Alabama?

Nice Campus
Ranked Well

Cons- Too Greek

I think you misunderstood. It's incredibly difficult to get into UVa if you live in northern Virginia. There's so much competition here, pretty much only top students get in.
