I started using the bumpers when DD was about 9 months old. Before that we used a fitted sheet, nothing else. I can see how the bumpers are nice - DD moved around a bunch in her sleep and was probably slightly more comfortable rolling over against a softer surface than the crib slats.
We did this too. Right around 9 months, we started using a bumper. Both kids really seemed to like it. I tied it fairly loosely so that once they were standing, they couldn't climb on it. We find DS snuggled up to the bumper every night. I think it makes him feel 'cozier'. He's 18 months though, so I'm not at all concerned about SIDS. So, maybe they still sell them for parents who want to use them past a year?
