Crib bedding sets are such a racket. I bought sheets and when we convert the crib to a toddler bed, we'll buy bedding.

I agree. the compete sets are completely useless. just buy sheets and call it a day.

We use them. They are great for babies who get their arms and legs stuck between the slabs and wake up crying. Just make sure you install them properly and check them when putting your baby to bed to make sure nothing is hanging loose anywhere. I also agree, I find it a bit much to ban bumpers.

Yeah, I think it's dumb, too.

I didn't buy a set, but I did get a couple of those skip hop complete sheets so there's a pattern on the side and I got a bedskirt, which I regret buying because once you lower the crib, it's useless.

I bought a breathable bumper, but never got around to installing it and DD has never needed it.

Plus, my DD would always get her legs caught in between the crib slats. Then, she'd cry and we'd have to go adjust her. Once we put the crib bumper on, she wasn't having that issue anymore. IMO, crib bumpers DO serve a purpose and I think Maryland has gone a bit overboard by banning them.

We did this too. Right around 9 months, we started using a bumper. Both kids really seemed to like it. I tied it fairly loosely so that once they were standing, they couldn't climb on it.

We find DS snuggled up to the bumper every night. I think it makes him feel 'cozier'. He's 18 months though, so I'm not at all concerned about SIDS.

So, maybe they still sell them for parents who want to use them past a year?

Some people still use them and most states still sell them.

I started using the bumpers when DD was about 9 months old. Before that we used a fitted sheet, nothing else. I can see how the bumpers are nice - DD moved around a bunch in her sleep and was probably slightly more comfortable rolling over against a softer surface than the crib slats.

Yeah, it's crazy.

I bought fitted sheets. Done. My ped practice advised against even so-called "breathable" bumpers. I never put anything else in the crib--no toys, mirrors, mobiles, etc. Kept it quiet and boring...and they slept. Safely.

For our crib, I purchased:

1. Two fitted sheets
2. A little mobile
3. A child-safe crib mirror
4. A water-protective layer between the fitted sheet and mattress

No bumper, no quilt, no nada.

I never used bumpers. I suppose some people might start to use them when their baby is older and they want to keep them from getting their arms and legs caught in the slats, but since you can't use them until after the kid is a year old, I suspect a lot just get forgotten about.

Is there an age at which most people start using these or are they just a part of most sets that never get used (like the weird things you are supposed to tie on the crib side to hold diapers but that seem really unrealistic to use)?
