In general they didn't move to the next step up house when they could afford it and instead stayed in the starter home.  Is travel that important to you that you would sacrifice elsewhere or not?  For my in-laws furnishing the house and spending a lot of money updating it came after a lot of other priorities.  Finally, think of what you are doing differently with your kids so they are on the same team and what advice you would give your kids if one becomes rich and another is middle class.
