Plush stuffed animals/toys I toss in a pillowcase, knot it, and wash on the gentle cycle, then dry the same way in the dryer (you have to make sure they get all the way dry even in the middle because mold). If something falls outside, I wipe it against my jeans before handing back. Maybe every 2 or 3 months I spray the playroom with Lysol at night. We don't have any plastic toys except some bath toys, and I toss some of them (like the ducks with the hole on the bottom) every couple of months because mold.
If you have a hot glue gun, put a little bit of glue over the hole on the bottom when you buy them. It keeps water/ mold from getting inside so you dont have to toss them as often. ( I learned this after throwing out about 3 sets). they dont squirt anymore, but my kids never use them as squirters anyway so this works for us.
