If something falls outside, I wipe it against my jeans before handing back. Maybe every 2 or 3 months I spray the playroom with Lysol at night. We don't have any plastic toys except some bath toys, and I toss some of them (like the ducks with the hole on the bottom) every couple of months because mold.
If you have a hot glue gun, put a little bit of glue over the hole on the bottom when you buy them. It keeps water/ mold from getting inside so you dont have to toss them as often. ( I learned this after throwing out about 3 sets). they dont squirt anymore, but my kids never use them as squirters anyway so this works for us.
