Turns out an old college football injury resulted in a deviated septum which was the cause behind the crazy loud snoring!  
He had surgery a couple weeks later - easy recovery and aside from a night here and there usually due to a couple glasses of Scotch, or a bad cold, - it has been BLISS.  This was about 3 years ago.  We would at the very least be in separate bedrooms at this point had he not had it checked out.  It was a game changer for us.  I hope you can speak to your husband and encourage some type of action to get this taken of care soon.
