I have been running for a few years but only recenlty started racing/doing longer distances than 10 miles. 1. http://www.amazon.com/Fitletic-Ultimate-Race-Black-Purple/dp/B00A49VE98/ref=sr_1_1/180-3358430-5879210?ie=UTF8&qid=1386789743&sr=8-1&keywords=ifitness+belt This i-fitness belt has been great for me. Other belts I have tried (amphipod) shifted around too much when I ran, no matter how tight I cinched the belt. This one bounces a tiny bit, but once I get going, I don't even notice. My iphone fits very well in the front pouch, and I can fit gu or packs of sports beans in the little loops on the side I also love the toggles that let me attach my bib for races! 2. hand held water bottle by Nathan http://www.amazon.com/Nathan-Quick-Draw-Handheld-Hydration/dp/B009KQ88H2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1386790036&sr=8-8&keywords=nathan+bottles In the summer, this was truly a "run saver" for me. My iphone fit in the pocket in the front, and because it straps to my hand, it wasn't so hard to carry it on long runs (if I had to truly grip it, I would have had cramps in my hand). This time of year, I don't need as much water, so I am considering getting a lighter version for winter, maybe this one http://www.amazon.com/Nathan-Quick-Handheld-Hydration-Cabaret/dp/B009KRNNWG/ref=sr_1_10?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1386790163&sr=1-10 3. Wireless headset so you can listen to music. I have this one http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/products/mobile-phones-gps/RF-MAB2.html which appears to be discontinued, but maybe you can find something similar or on ebay or something. I LOVE this set. I have found that regular ear buds bounce out of my ears as I run, so I like that these clip on around my ears so they stay on. Also I can control the on/off, volume, and even fast fwd or rewind to a different song right on the ear piece, instead of having to dig out my phone from my belt or water bottle pocket. 4. If you plan on trying to run longer distances, maybe an assortment of "fuel"--gu packets, sports beans, those waffle things....see what type/flavor works best for you. I was a die hard Gu chocolate fan until I tried a sample of the jelly belly sports beans at a race expo---now the "fruit punch" flavor sports beans are the only thing I want. Other people I now swear by those waffle things (I haven't tried them.) Other people I know just use regular candy or peanut butter filled pretzles...
