Thanks for posting that link! I had no idea such things existed! I love that that website has ones for Disney races--I have run one in the past and will be running more in the future and it would be fun to have a specific hanger for them!
You're welcome. I felt like I struck gold when I found that site. They have so much to choose from, plus do custom! My husband is going to love it and I'm going to love getting all those medals off my African woman sculpture in the living room!

Depends on your personal water needs, and how hot it is, and how far. Personally, I only want to carry water if I'm going for an hour (maybe 40 minutes in summer). And even then, I'll just grab an old gatorade bottle from my recycling bin and carry it in my hand, or maybe even stash it under a bush if I know my route will carry me past the bush later (so I don't have to carry it for most of the run).

Under $50, I'd suggest the following:
1. Yaktrax (for winter running in snow/ice)
2. SmartWool PhD running socks
3. Nathan Quickdraw water bottle holder
4. maybe an ID bracelet in case of emergency?
5. BodyGlide
6. Any sort of Patagonia half-zip pullover that's on sale
7. gift certificate for a massage
8. one of those self-massage foam-roller sticks?

Here are many other options - http://goo.gl/P2QJ8S

My hubby uses something that looks very similar to this. His holds more bottles and does not have the storage part.

What brand of socks do you recommend?

Thanks!

Hi OP! I"m 14:36---did you see my #2? That is what I use for hydration. Other people like to use the water bottles that can attach to belts. I have only tried amphipod and did not like it. I felt it shifted to much as I ran. The manufacturer or the other belt I linked (i-fitness) makes a version with water bottles, so I might try that. I will probably wait 'till summer though. This time of year I don't feel as much need for hydration (I might NEED it---I just don't FEEL it like I do in the summer!).

Another thing, I have learned to not be shy about going into businesses and using their water fountain--I am mostly thinking of grocery stores here.

I like Thorlo socks. I had an employee at a running boutique store make fun of me because I said that, that they look like old lady running socks!--and yeah, they do...but they sure are comfortable. He tried to sell me on Balga...and I bought a pair and they were fine...but I prefer Thorlo....but I gotta say, I also buy the 6 pack of addidas running socks at Costco and wear those too. In fact, my first marathon this last fall was in a pair of Addidas from Costco!

How long to you run?

I'm a new runner as well, and transitioned to outside when I could run around 20-25 minutes. I usually do 30 minute continuous runs, or 60-90 minute run/walk combinations. When I transitioned to outside, I stopped drinking water during workouts. If you're hydrated before and re-hydrate after, you should be fine. It might be difficult in the beginning, but there will always be some challenges adapting to outside (incline, surface, temperature, winds, etc). I'd suggest giving it a go on a nice day. If you can't do your usual amount, that's fine, but still try it. You will adjust over time.

That said, I regularly see people running outside with either a water bottle in their hands, or on a belt. So someone may chime in with a recommendation if you find you really need water during runs.

A SPI belt if you run outdoors. A lot of people like Buff headgear for colder weather, but I don't like them. Maybe some headphones for running? Or a gift certificate to a running store like Pacers, or towards new shoes?

I have been running for a few years but only recenlty started racing/doing longer distances than 10 miles.

1.
http://www.amazon.com/Fitletic-Ultimate-Race-Black-Purple/dp/B00A49VE98/ref=sr_1_1/180-3358430-5879210?ie=UTF8&qid=1386789743&sr=8-1&keywords=ifitness+belt

This i-fitness belt has been great for me. Other belts I have tried (amphipod) shifted around too much when I ran, no matter how tight I cinched the belt. This one bounces a tiny bit, but once I get going, I don't even notice. My iphone fits very well in the front pouch, and I can fit gu or packs of sports beans in the little loops on the side I also love the toggles that let me attach my bib for races!

2. hand held water bottle by Nathan
http://www.amazon.com/Nathan-Quick-Draw-Handheld-Hydration/dp/B009KQ88H2/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1386790036&sr=8-8&keywords=nathan+bottles
In the summer, this was truly a "run saver" for me. My iphone fit in the pocket in the front, and because it straps to my hand, it wasn't so hard to carry it on long runs (if I had to truly grip it, I would have had cramps in my hand). This time of year, I don't need as much water, so I am considering getting a lighter version for winter, maybe this one http://www.amazon.com/Nathan-Quick-Handheld-Hydration-Cabaret/dp/B009KRNNWG/ref=sr_1_10?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1386790163&sr=1-10

3. Wireless headset so you can listen to music. I have this one http://www.rocketfishproducts.com/products/mobile-phones-gps/RF-MAB2.html
which appears to be discontinued, but maybe you can find something similar or on ebay or something. I LOVE this set. I have found that regular ear buds bounce out of my ears as I run, so I like that these clip on around my ears so they stay on. Also I can control the on/off, volume, and even fast fwd or rewind to a different song right on the ear piece, instead of having to dig out my phone from my belt or water bottle pocket.

4. If you plan on trying to run longer distances, maybe an assortment of "fuel"--gu packets, sports beans, those waffle things....see what type/flavor works best for you. I was a die hard Gu chocolate fan until I tried a sample of the jelly belly sports beans at a race expo---now the "fruit punch" flavor sports beans are the only thing I want. Other people I now swear by those waffle things (I haven't tried them.) Other people I know just use regular candy or peanut butter filled pretzles...

I know you said no clothes but I would LOVE to have someone buy me duplicates of my favorite running tights. I have about 4 different styles but only one pair fits well. Other than that, really nice running socks are a true luxury. I run several times a week and don't use any gadgets.

Hi all-

I'm new to running and my brother wants to know what Christmas gift to get for me. Can you recommend a running gadget or accessory for $50.00 or under? I don't want him to buy my running clothes though and he's not a runner (so he may not know what's useful to runners).

Thank you!
