We have a really crappy neighbor with tall pines that wreak havoc on us. For seven years we've offered to pay 1/2 to cut down trees (on his property) and he refuses. Well today, his tree fell on my 92 year old dad's car. The damage over the years has been incredible. We've been generous and easy going for too long. Today we retained an attorney.
Did you let him know in writing that the tree threatened your property? If you didn't, too bad. Is the tree alive? If it is, too bad. If you had offered to pay all of it, maybe you'd be paying less than you will now.
THIS. OP, know when to say when, stop obsessing, and you will be fine. Contrary to what the "crazy bamboo lady" poster says, bamboo will NOT kill you in your sleep. But your neighbor might! It never pays to push a neighbor, especially if they have a nicer house than you, just saying. There are too many know it alls who know nothing (often lawyers). If you are that concerned about bamboo matters, your time and money would be best spent getting proper - and *above average* - legal counsel.
