Be nice to the secretary in the counseling office. Make an appointment--don't just show up. Tell them early you intend to enroll--there is time-consuming paperwork. Make an appointment the summer before to meet with the counseling department. Your child will take placement exams to determine class levels, language placement, math placement etc. Leave time to reevaluate those placements if they don't feel right. You also may choose to have your child take a summer course if you think they should be pushed ahead of the recommended course.
Mine going to a W school took no placement exams. I'm not sure that was even an option. Does Churchill do placement exams? If you've taken algebra 1 in 8th grade, as is typical coming from private school, you do geometry in 9th grade. The counselor did look at his middle school grades to give advice on placement, history track, etc. But ultimately we chose the classes. We were also told it's also better to register in the spring, not the summer.
