They'll tell you what you need to bring. Call early to find out when to go so that you aren't registering late.
Consider doing a shadow visit now if Churchill does those. Both my DCs did that. Alternatively find out what day the rising 8th graders visit school and see if he can join. At ours it's the last day of school after finals are done. There is also an orientation day for new 9th graders the week before school starts.
If he's doing sports be sure to look up the tryout/preseason dates. Sports starts about 2 weeks before school starts and it is NOT optional if you want to do a sport. This catches a lot of people by surprise.
Ask when the meeting is for rising 8th grade parents. This will give you lots of information as to sign ups, what's available etc. The Churchill website may also be useful to see the activities, what paperwork is needed for sports etc.
If possible, try to get involved in an activity where other kids will be going to Churchill. Knowing a couple of kids when they start school makes it a lot easier.
Ignore the poster that Churchill isn't good. Yes it is big and may be a bit of a shock. we transferred from private to public for MS and have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the academics, the teachers and the staff. You won't get your hand held as much but there is so much there that is just not available at a private.
good luck.
