I think either way is fine, but whatever you all decide, the kids need to know way in advance to avoid hard feelings and help them make their plans.

I think we're probably going to pay for any VA state school, and also give our kids a list of private colleges we'll pay for.  If they want to choose a private off the list, they're responsible for the difference between state and private tuition.

We may be flexible if there's a private program that has something specific for them or if there are other extenuating circumstances, but I'm not paying full freight for them to go to Gettysburg or High Point if they can just go to VT.  [/quote]
