Strep is one of the only universally sensitive organisms a responds to good old fashioned penicillin or amox - it does NOT require augmentn. To the PP whose doctor sees "resistant" strep - I would challenge you to ask him if its culture-positive strep or is he treating a bunch of viruses assuming they are strep (and then, of course, they fail antibiotic therapy). Also, if he's seen resistant strep, he should publish that paper. It would be ground breaking. -pediatric sub-specialist
In the past year my son has had strep 6 times. The first two times he was given amoxicillin and then his fever and headache returned about 2 days after finishing the amoxicillin, and both times he was still positive on an overnight culture. The first time he was given Cephalexin to clear it, the second time he was given Cefdinir, both had a final result of a negative culture. Our ped now skips amoxicillin when he gets strep. I can't make a blanket statement, but I can say that amoxicillin doesn't have a great track record with my kid and strep. (And before someone asks...we don't have a carrier in the house. We've all been swabbed. I also change toothbrushes and toothpaste after 48 hours and again after the antibiotic is finished.)
