In the past year my son has had strep 6 times. The first two times he was given amoxicillin and then his fever and headache returned about 2 days after finishing the amoxicillin, and both times he was still positive on an overnight culture. The first time he was given Cephalexin to clear it, the second time he was given Cefdinir, both had a final result of a negative culture. Our ped now skips amoxicillin when he gets strep. I can't make a blanket statement, but I can say that amoxicillin doesn't have a great track record with my kid and strep.

(And before someone asks...we don't have a carrier in the house. We've all been swabbed. I also change toothbrushes and toothpaste after 48 hours and again after the antibiotic is finished.)

Many strains of strep are resistant to amoxicillin. Our ped has had too many repeat cases with amoxicillin and no longer uses it for strep.

I once spilled a bottle of antibiotic pills (outdoors) and had to pay for the replacement.

My kids just had strep over spring break. Amoxicillin did the trick and was only $25. We were out of town, and I forgot my prescription so I paid out of pocket.

OP here. My pharmacy did not offer to refill it without full retail payment, and my doctor did not offer to make this any easier...and I'm not going to ask for any favors. I don't want to put either of them in that position. I will call the insurance company and see if they will have a bit of mercy on me. We can't swing $70 right now, but we can't stop treating strep mid-course either.

This happened to me. Went to pharmacist and explained what happened and they just gave me a refill. They had a form they filled out but that was it . Didn't have to pay anything more. I think they were kind and blamed it on the type of bottle they had given me and then it was the bottle's fault and not me. I would feel bad for the bottle, but I think it worked out ok for him.

Why wouldn't your insurance cover it? What if you needed a second round of ABX a week later; would your insurance cover it then?

Call insurance they will authorize one time as a courtesy also you may have lost override, or ask dr to change the directions a little it will look like a new prescription they will cover

Do you have another kid? My friend's ped did this once and it was no problem. Similarly, is there another med that can be prescribed instead? If your insurance company gives you a problem, you can say that your DD had a negative reaction to it or something.

I lost my grip on dd's antibiotics while opening the bottle and spilled about half. The pharmacist told me that the doctor will authorize a refill, but insurance usually won't cover it. If I have to pay out of pocket, it will be about $70.

Has anyone had success in getting insurance to cover another rx?
