But he also started hanging out with with activists who had chosen to lead simple, low budget lives and I think he was embarrassed to be so engaged in buying stuff.

But there was a time when he saw a $1200 suit on sale for $300 and it just hurt him to not buy it - even though we had thousands of dollars in credit card debt and student loans to pay off. Me, I enjoy looking at stuff and [i]not[/i] buying it.  For him, I think buying it made him feel like a grown up.
