The average Virginia SAT score is 1101 to 1116, for the whole state, while Maryland’s statewide average is only 998.

Only 48% Virginia students take the SAT test, while 73% of students in Maryland take the test.  The higher your participation rate, the lower your score tends to trend. 
Kansas has the highest average SAT score with 1238, but Kansas also has lower test participation than most of the US at 2%.
