My mother took Fosamax. She experienced jawbone necrosis. This is a med with very serious potential side effects. Be aware and educated before starting.
How often did she take the medicine?
Sorry I do t recall the exact details, it was over 15 years ago. She took the medication exactly as directed for several months. She passed way several years ago so this is all the information I can recall. Medication stopped as soon as jaw problems appeared. She was not I it for too long. Diagnosed with osteopenia. Lifestyle: healthy weight all her life, never smoker, very rarely drank, no health problems and no medication prior to Fosamax. Retired teacher so never worked around environmental hazardness. Even if there is a small chance of a negative side effect, someone has to get it. Look at negative side effects for others in your family. Thats the warning I got! Also be hyper aware of oral hygiene and make sure your fetal provider is aware of this medication.
I’m so sorry that happened to your mother. Thank you for sharing the warning. In my reading, I saw that the jaw necrosis happens in one out of 300,000 who take it orally and usually happens after dental work such as with dentures or a tooth being pulled. It’s also more common with injected Fosomax than the oral pill and with people taking it for three years or more. I include the above to let others know to research. I was worried about the jaw and also about the problems with the femur. After discussing with my doctor, who also has a PharmD, I decided to go ahead and take it.
