Wow I knew it was expensive but not this expensive! My DS applied ED to a school that costs 79k all in. Basically 80k a year. For some reason, I thought it was more like 60k. We can afford it and won’t qualify for any aid so didn’t apply. But still, I question how any school is worth ~320k. I assume he will need grad school too. Plus we have 2 younger kids. How much does your student’s ED choice cost?
It’s not just about ED. It’s the same in RD. If you look at more than 50 schools, you will realized that this is not an issue of one school. Most private schools cost around 80-90 per year, regardless of ranking. I am talking about COA not just tuition. The only difference is between public and private. So, what parents can do is to give a maximum amount. Let kids choose under this budget. Then, ED, EA, and RD are all strategies about admission chances without financial concern.
+1 We can't afford to be full pay at an $80K+ school. We decided we could manage $40k per year max. Kids chose within that budget. That meant only in-state public schools were inconsideration for ED (ended up not doing any ED). One picked an in-state public, another OOS private w/ merit aid.
there are also plenty of privates that give excellent merit that can cost only $35-45K with merit. So worth searching for those and applying with the hope of gettin g enough merit.
