My DS applied ED to a school that costs 79k all in. Basically 80k a year. For some reason, I thought it was more like 60k. We can afford it and won’t qualify for any aid so didn’t apply. But still, I question how any school is worth ~320k. I assume he will need grad school too.

Plus we have 2 younger kids.

How much does your student’s ED choice cost?

It’s not just about ED. It’s the same in RD.

If you look at more than 50 schools, you will realized that this is not an issue of one school. Most private schools cost around 80-90 per year, regardless of ranking. I am talking about COA not just tuition. The only difference is between public and private. So, what parents can do is to give a maximum amount. Let kids choose under this budget. Then, ED, EA, and RD are all strategies about admission chances without financial concern.

+1 We can't afford to be full pay at an $80K+ school. We decided we could manage $40k per year max. Kids chose within that budget. That meant only in-state public schools were inconsideration for ED (ended up not doing any ED). One picked an in-state public, another OOS private w/ merit aid.

there are also plenty of privates that give excellent merit that can cost only $35-45K with merit. So worth searching for those and applying with the hope of gettin g enough merit.

You don't spend that unless you can also provide same amount (plus inflation costs )for the other 2 kids as well.
And if he needs grad school he should be considering how to pay for that as well and attend a cheaper school for undergrad. There is still time to pull the ED and apply to other schools.

That's why my kids didn't apply anywhere ED. ED gives you an admissions advantage but takes away the opportunity to compare merit offers.

We simply don’t believe it is worthy of the price to pay $80k+ year even though we could.

We similarly told our kids the budget had a certain ceiling. If they can get merit to bring it down to that amount that is great. If the school is over that budget they will need to decide if it is worth it to them to pay the difference or if they want to choose a less expensive option.

We originally took that approach but then DS got into a school that is widely regarded as the best in the country for his major. We decided full price was probably worth it in that scenario.

Approximately $95K before $20K merit. Won't impact our budget.

Make sure you add in all the fees---my kid's Ivy this year cost $94K in required costs.
It's crazy.

Whether is worth it is so subjective. It's such a defining time in a person's development with such unique opportunities. The name and network stay with them. It's worth it for top universities and LACs. At least that's what I'm telling myself.
