Koch Brothers and their affiliated nonprofits have dumped a ton of money into GMU over the past 30 years. Lots of part-time PhDs and law degrees for GOP appointees. Executive branch and Hill staff live in NoVA for the cheaper taxes. They basically had a long term goal of establishing a "conservative" educational institution within the DC metro area.

Yes. The DoE concluded on 8/22 that GMU violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act through DEI hiring/promotion policies favoring underrepresented groups, demanding a public apology from President Gregory Washington (who is black) and a resolution agreement within 10 days. On Aug. 25, Washington's lawyer refused the apology, affirming no wrongdoing. GMU faces multiple probes (at least four since Jan. 2025), including DOJ investigations into admissions/scholarships and antisemitism. The university has renamed its DEI office to comply but denies discrimination.
