Koch Brothers and their affiliated nonprofits have dumped a ton of money into GMU over the past 30 years. Lots of part-time PhDs and law degrees for GOP appointees. Executive branch and Hill staff live in NoVA for the cheaper taxes. They basically had a long term goal of establishing a "conservative" educational institution within the DC metro area.

I'm surprised a Democratic governor hasn't dismantled the obvious politically partisan alliance between the school and its benefactors. It's a state university, not a private institution.

GMU’s president is a Black man, who stands up to Trump, which I’m sure riles him to no end.

The DoE concluded on 8/22 that GMU violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act through DEI hiring/promotion policies favoring underrepresented groups, demanding a public apology from President Gregory Washington (who is black) and a resolution agreement within 10 days. On Aug. 25, Washington's lawyer refused the apology, affirming no wrongdoing. GMU faces multiple probes (at least four since Jan. 2025), including DOJ investigations into admissions/scholarships and antisemitism. The university has renamed its DEI office to comply but denies discrimination.

I can't imagine that hiring Mike Pence, who Trump apparently didn't mind that the January 6 domestic terrorists were attempting to hang to death, would help GMU improve its acceptabililty to MAGA.

The GMU law school is quite separate from the main campus. The Koch Bros have bought out the law school and economics departments.

I don’t share many political views with Pence, but he is honorable and discharged his constitutional duties when many would have caved. So good for him and George Mason. Hopefully he is successful and the university is better for having hired him.
