I have a major issue. I was DOGE'd earlier this year and have now been out of work over 5 months. After 4.5 months of job searching, I received a job offer, which I accepted and passed the background check (job would start next week). 2 weeks later, a prestigious investment bank called and offered me a job paying $100k more. I accepted that offer also and completed the background check earlier this week and it is pending employer review. I received the second background report and, despite not being on my resume and myself not including it as an employer, it shows the first job offer listed as an "employer" with a start date of next week (zero weeks worked). I was just about to email the first offer to decline prior to my start date. How serious is this? The second company's background check didn't actually list this as an item flagged for review. So maybe the HR team won't be concerned or even notice the first offer is listed on my background check? I called the HR department of the second company and they said they hadn't started reviewing, so likely I'll have to decide what to do before the second background check clears. They said I should be receiving an email from the HR team if they have any questions or need additional information, but I haven't received it yet. I've tried searching the internet and everyone else's problem seems to be that they can't substantiate their employment. I can do that, but don't know what to do about this additional information (the first offer) on my background report. I had planned to decline the first offer and now I'm terrified that both offers will disappear and I'll be out of work for another 5 months... Please help!
They will view you as expendable, since you are a flight risk and will drop a job for another at the drop of a hat.
