I once took a Federal job because it was the only offer in hand. After 6 weeks, a commercial company (that I had talked with prior to starting as a Fed) called and offered me a job at 20% higher salary. I resigned giving 2 weeks notice and explained to my boss the salary difference and that I had thought the other company was not going to make an offer. Not ideal, but totally honest and truthful.
