Sally is a colleague and someone I respect and need to work with.

I feel annoyed by this and I'm sure some of how I feel is based on past stupid things he's said (another straw on the camel's back, so to speak).

I don't blame you for not having a response at the ready, but something along the lines of, "Wow Joe. That's incredibly inappropriate and insulting" would have been right.

At this point I think you should talk to him privately and say that you were too shocked to say anything in the moment, but that you found the insinuation that you'd have an extramarital affair with a colleague to be inappropriate and offensive.

I disagree on throwing in an HR lecture. Just confront the behavior directly.[/quote]
