What's the advantage? Towns don't have their own schools, you still pay county tax, and (many?) Reston residents already pay a special levy for the Reston community center.
Reston could get it's own public works and police department. There's two reasons.
In other words, Reston would have to shell out millions of dollars to establish and sustain its own pubic works and police departments (all on the backs of "town" taxpayers) that would effectively offer the same levels of service already offered by the county. No thanks.
Actually, no. Net costs likely the same but more local control -- and those pesky Reston unique fees would become tax-deductible. So likely a net savings. FYI Towns receive state funding for things like roads and such. And county does not pay for roads either. In Virginia, VDOT handles roads in counties. Towns get control over the roads -- while the state continues to pay for them. Counties do not have control over their own roads. Water and sewer still would be Fairfax Water Authority which actually is independent from the county - and it also serves parts of PW and L counties. Herndon or Vienna town police dept is tiny - basically it only handles traffic enforcement. County police still handles any major crimes.
