I’m still new to the school system here, and this is just a personal reflection from a parent who’s trying to make sense of it all.  My son is in AAP through principal placement. He’s respectful, follows rules, and although he’s not very organized and tends to work slowly, he is doing very well overall. His CogAT score was 141, and his iReady scores were 99 in math and 98 in reading, with all reading sub-scores above grade level. I understand that the HOPE form is not an academic assessment, but I still find it confusing. His ratings on HOPE were mostly “rarely” or “sometimes,” and this year, reading wasn’t even listed as a strength—even though in the iReady reading section, he performed in the top 2% nationwide. So my question is: If a child is performing in the top 2% in reading nationally, why wouldn’t reading be considered a strength on the HOPE form? Which evaluation should I trust more—iReady or HOPE? I know HOPE is more about behaviors and traits, but shouldn’t there be at least some alignment between strong academic indicators and how a child is perceived? Just trying to understand how to best support my child, and would appreciate hearing how other parents interpret this.
