HOPE is about how much the teacher likes him and how much he participates in class. Sounds like his teacher does not like him and he doesn't participate much.

If you observe gifted behaviors in your child (while trying to stay as objective as possible) and they have those very high standardized test scores, the HOPE says way more about their teacher imo.

Honestly the hope should just be used to identify bad behavior and the very very rare child that is gifted but does not test will. Testing really tells you most of what you need to know to place a child.

We also got a mediocre hope. No comments written on the form and only one subject area checked. My son has 2 part time teachers and 29 kids in the class. Several are SPED. I honestly believe the teachers don’t know my child well enough to fill this out properly. But of course the school will trust the teacher’s judgement over the parents.

So did your child apply this year and didn't get in?

Most parents on here say the HOPE score is hit or miss depending on whether or not you have a teacher who really takes the time to "get" your child.

What do you see? Do you see a kid who seems to read above grade level and is easily able to answer comprehension questions?

I would also look at SOL + grades, even though the 1-4 scale in ES is often pointless.

He took the SOL for the first time yesterday, so I don’t know the results yet.

As for reading—English is not my first language, so it’s hard for me to assess his level myself. But what I can say is that books have never left his hands. He’s been reading English books since he was 6 years old and he truly enjoys it. He reads more than 4 books every month
And yes, it seems that everything relies on the teacher’s perspective—which, at the end of the day, is still a human perspective, and many factors can influence it.

Actually, he has a brother who is more outgoing and has a strong leadership personality. I noticed that his ratings are better than his, even though, to be honest, he is not as academically strong as he is!

I’m still new to the school system here, and this is just a personal reflection from a parent who’s trying to make sense of it all.

My son is in AAP through principal placement. He’s respectful, follows rules, and although he’s not very organized and tends to work slowly, he is doing very well overall. His CogAT score was 141, and his iReady scores were 99 in math and 98 in reading, with all reading sub-scores above grade level.

I understand that the HOPE form is not an academic assessment, but I still find it confusing. His ratings on HOPE were mostly “rarely” or “sometimes,” and this year, reading wasn’t even listed as a strength—even though in the iReady reading section, he performed in the top 2% nationwide.

So my question is: If a child is performing in the top 2% in reading nationally, why wouldn’t reading be considered a strength on the HOPE form?
Which evaluation should I trust more—iReady or HOPE?

I know HOPE is more about behaviors and traits, but shouldn’t there be at least some alignment between strong academic indicators and how a child is perceived?

Just trying to understand how to best support my child, and would appreciate hearing how other parents interpret this.
