There's a fundamental problem with all these labels. The people they represent may not actually hold such views, but they still vote for the politicians upholding those values because they've been brainwashed by the media they listen to, to never trust the other side. Take gun control. A majority of polled Americans have wanted common sense gun control for years now, which includes more restrictions than currently exist. Did this ever get reflected in recent legislation? No. Why? Because of extremely effective lobbies and right-wing propaganda disseminated on Fox and social media that smear Democrats and have sowed extreme distrust in more rural and conservative circles, who now will never vote Democrat. And the GOP politicians, spurred by the fringes of their party and pushed by the NRA and Fox, do nothing. Same goes for any issue on which the conservative rank and file might be willing to see reason. Fox doesn't want them to. Politicians accept money and support from those with an interest in pushing extreme views, but since it's packaged in an "own the libs" style which right wing politicians have fostered for decades, the base still votes for them, thinking they're protecting their country from bogeymen which don't exist. And you could say the same, in a smaller way, for the left. It wallows in its own media bubble, and is powered by its own interests which entirely ignore the pain of border towns overwhelmed by migrants, and the regions dependent on old industries that have been laid to waste by investments in new energy sources and unfettered global trade. People there feel entirely abandoned by multiple left-wing governments. This could be solved by having multiple parties, not just two, or systematic ranked choice voting. That way people might become more comfortable going out of their original party to vote for an interesting candidate.
