The Country Club thing used to fascinate me. I had a few friends over the year from major generational wealth, and I didn't know until I saw their home or something accidentally slipped that gave it a way. They belonged to country clubs and that sort of thing but never brought it up. They were understated and I found that classy.

I have one friend from college who is obsessed with dropping wealth/status markers and I have heard about the country club they belonged to growing up at least 100 times. She makes sure you notice her new over-priced purse. She is obsessed with looking wealthy. The thing is underneath that there is a funny and self-aware person. Her mother was deeply insecure and even though the mom came from some wealth I guess she was desperate as a non-Wasp to fit in with wealthy Wasp culture? My own mother was also obsessed with pretending to be WASPs, yet expected us to be proud of our ethnicity too. My mother will name drop BS stuff to impress people. So my long-winded answer is....the person is very insecure. Hopefully that person will gain perspective.[/quote]
