Like many other places, many people really love Trinidad. Is it the safest? No. Do I feel unsafe when I'm there. Yes. There is a sense of community there. The neighborhood is definitely turning and has been for a long time. I'd rather be in Trinidad than Petworth, and people love Petworth too.
Trinidad may have a similar safety profile to Petworth but it is a lot more central and has a lot more things in it/near it than Petworth.
Exponentially better public transportation options in Petworth, tho. Both have been described as "almost there" for like 20 years now, which makes me think neither will ever actually get there.
The problem with statements like "almost there" is that people have wildly different ideas of what "there" is. For the average DCUM user who has a triple strand of natural pearls surgically implanted into their palm no neighborhood will be "there" until it looks like Spring Valley. For a person who grew up east of the park in the 80s and 90s both neighborhoods reached "there" way back when they got their first restaurants where you could eat at a table and not order through bulletproof glass. For most people it's somewhere in between but personally I think Petworth is definitely solidly in the "there" category while Trinidad is scraping the fringes but will definitely get there.
