I wish they had focused more time on the earlier (1970-1990) musical performances.
Have you watched the documentary “Ladies and Gentlemen… 50 Years of Music on SNL”? It has a pretty good balance of performances and gives some great behind the scenes stories. I have found most of the specials for the 50th anniversary have been heavily focused on the past 25 years, which is both disappointing yet understandable. They’re tapping into Gen-X and Millennial nostalgia. I happen to have the 25th anniversary special on DVD and watched it last night, and just honoring 25 years in a 3 hours special was tight. I enjoyed the Beyond SNL documentary on Peacock but also felt it was lacking content. It would have been nice to dedicate an hour to each “era” of the show like they did with the season 10 episode and the Cowbell sketch.
A lot of the people from the early years of SNL are dead. If they are alive, those musicians are in their 80s and likely stopped performing years ago. Hell, the B52s were amazing on Friday night….but they are in their late 70s! People performing on SNL in 1979 are easily in their 80s or just dead. It’s pretty incredible that Lorne still looks so good and is fully with it.
