Have you watched the documentary “Ladies and Gentlemen… 50 Years of Music on SNL”? It has a pretty good balance of performances and gives some great behind the scenes stories.

I have found most of the specials for the 50th anniversary have been heavily focused on the past 25 years, which is both disappointing yet understandable. They’re tapping into Gen-X and Millennial nostalgia. I happen to have the 25th anniversary special on DVD and watched it last night, and just honoring 25 years in a 3 hours special was tight.

I enjoyed the Beyond SNL documentary on Peacock but also felt it was lacking content. It would have been nice to dedicate an hour to each “era” of the show like they did with the season 10 episode and the Cowbell sketch.

A lot of the people from the early years of SNL are dead. If they are alive, those musicians are in their 80s and likely stopped performing years ago.

Hell, the B52s were amazing on Friday night….but they are in their late 70s! People performing on SNL in 1979 are easily in their 80s or just dead.

It’s pretty incredible that Lorne still looks so good and is fully with it.

NBC aired a 3 hour special on Saturday night that discusses the history of music on SNL. Sooooo well done, lots of archival footage and back stories featuring SNL’s crew and cast.

The Peacock special from Friday night is a separate 3 hour variety show from Radio City Music Hall with live performances by a tons of musicians.

Lady Gaga singing dick in a box while playing piano was too good.

But it is a big accomplishment to stay on air for 50 years and there seems to be a dearth of new shows so they probably didn't have anything else to air anyway.

The concert was streamed on Peacock, not aired on NBC.

i started watching it today. I’m enjoying it. I am enjoying the older bands (favorites so far were Eddie Vedder singing Corduroy and B-52s). It’s been fun watching all the celebrities in the audience enjoying this concert (Pedro Pascal always seems to be having the time of his life with SNL)
