For those having a breakdown over the protection funding cuts- why doesn’t Harvard and others open up their coffers? Harvard has how much? $53 BILLION??? Maybe it’s time these greedy institutions start using their money to offset possible increases in tuition? For every 1 letter you send to Congress, send 20 to Harvard and the others.
You do not seem to understand how endowments work. That $53 billion (or whatever $x amount) endowment comprises hundreds or more individual, restricted purpose endowment funds. You can't just reassign the funds donated to support scholarship in Classics to medical research or to cover across the board tuition increases. Yes, there are some more flexible funds available within many endowments but you'd be surprised at how hamstrung universities can be. It also differs from school to school within many universities. Harvard is famous for having "every tub on its own bottom" and the 2008 recession had vastly different consequences even among Harvard's schools (i.e., Harvard Business School vs. Faculty of Arts & Sciences).
