You do not seem to understand how endowments work. That $53 billion (or whatever $x amount) endowment comprises hundreds or more individual, restricted purpose endowment funds. You can't just reassign the funds donated to support scholarship in Classics to medical research or to cover across the board tuition increases. Yes, there are some more flexible funds available within many endowments but you'd be surprised at how hamstrung universities can be.

It also differs from school to school within many universities. Harvard is famous for having "every tub on its own bottom" and the 2008 recession had vastly different consequences even among Harvard's schools (i.e., Harvard Business School vs. Faculty of Arts & Sciences).

No university in the country can afford to spend $100 to $200 million a year on government research, this is a horrible suggestion.

Why should Harvard subsidize government research? The system we have in place right now works well and contributes $2 to the economy for every dollar the government spends.

The government can factor in the size of a university's endowment when awarding research grants and choose not to award a school that can afford to do the research on its own.

But the government not funding any research is extremely short sighted.

Are you aware that the use of an endowment is restricted by law? Maybe they could contribute more but it isn’t like they can spend all of that money, not by any stretch of the imagination.

You don't seem to understand how endowments work. Go read up on them and come back when you actually know what you're talking about.

The NIH research grants are 1% of our national budget. We got no bang for the buck out of this insanity. This has nothing to do with fixing our budgetary crisis and everything to do with trying to destroy universities and research.

I think the research cuts are horrible but why does an institution need an untouchable endowment in the billions?

Harvard is one university. Does this country want to support and be a leader in scientific research or not? Apparently not.

And the amount of funds being cut out of scientific research, while devastating to research, is a drop in the bucket of our overall national budget. All this does is help to destroy one of the good things about this country and does nothing to fix our financial issues.
