I was curious and just looked. Our large FCPS public HS had 8 freshman total on JV or Varsity last spring.
It really varies widely from school to school. We heard for years that it was impossible to make JV as a freshman at most MCPS schools so DS worried. However, our HS is on the smaller side and the team was about evenly divided between 9th and 10th. Based on DS’s description of tryouts each year, about 50 kids tryout and I think they roster 22. I’ve heard of other schools where 100 show up.
Our boys HS freshman team had 75 try out. On the girls side we had trouble fielding a team. School of about 2000 kids. The difference is that the girls coach starts telling kids at an early age that "if you do not play at a high level club you will never make varsity" so a lot of the lower end players just do not try out for freshman. It is so bad that if you do not make varsity as a freshman (either 2 or 0 each year since they do not want to have only 1 and her feel weird) you HAVE to play freshman or we would not have enough players for a team. It is sad to watch since out freshman team will have 6 or 7 ECNL/GA/RL/NL players on the team and the last game I saw the score was 5-0 after 5 minutes. Doesn't even matter that the freshman goalie made varsity and the girl in the net never played soccer before
i wish we had freshman teams in virginia. so many kids lose out on the opportunity to play for their school. Say what you will about the quality/style of play in HS soccer, but representing your school is a vibe that club can't recreate.
