It really varies widely from school to school. We heard for years that it was impossible to make JV as a freshman at most MCPS schools so DS worried. However, our HS is on the smaller side and the team was about evenly divided between 9th and 10th. Based on DS’s description of tryouts each year, about 50 kids tryout and I think they roster 22. I’ve heard of other schools where 100 show up.

Our boys HS freshman team had 75 try out. On the girls side we had trouble fielding a team. School of about 2000 kids. The difference is that the girls coach starts telling kids at an early age that "if you do not play at a high level club you will never make varsity" so a lot of the lower end players just do not try out for freshman. It is so bad that if you do not make varsity as a freshman (either 2 or 0 each year since they do not want to have only 1 and her feel weird) you HAVE to play freshman or we would not have enough players for a team. It is sad to watch since out freshman team will have 6 or 7 ECNL/GA/RL/NL players on the team and the last game I saw the score was 5-0 after 5 minutes. Doesn't even matter that the freshman goalie made varsity and the girl in the net never played soccer before

i wish we had freshman teams in virginia. so many kids lose out on the opportunity to play for their school. Say what you will about the quality/style of play in HS soccer, but representing your school is a vibe that club can't recreate.

My son plays EDP1 and HS. We are in MCPS which has a fall season. In 9th he played JV and so did about 3/4 of his team. In 10th varsity. He moved travel teams during that time but both had a roster of 18. The travel teams have no fall season to speak of so no conflicts. They did offer some Sunday practices for those who wanted to attend. They pick up as soon as HS ends with full practices and tournaments. Since HS is over, they aren’t worried about players having conflicts. Injuries are always an issue but his coaches have never seen a reason to carry extra players just in case. 18 provides 7 subs and they can always bring up B team players.

My kid is a sophomore (in MD) and has been on JV for two years so far. They play on the B team (not ECNL either, just local travel and some 3-4 hour stuff). The roster is about 19 and they practice together with the A team which about the same size. Each practice seems to have about 20-25 kids, even now in winter.

Our HS season is fall. In the fall, they don't practice with club and may have a weekend thing or two, but HS also has some weekend stuff and takes priority.

In the winter and spring they show up to club when they can, which TBH is at best 2 practices a week and any games they can make. They have a lot of conflicts with academics, HS soccer (their program runs year round workouts and some practices), and extracurriculars. We don't sweat it, we just communciate (and ask DS to communicate directly) and end up eating a lot of the cost.

We do not believe in two-a-days for injury, burnout, and making room for academics/extracurriculars/rest reasons.

My kid is not a college soccer hopeful - not competitive enough and doesn't want to be a student athlete in college. For this reason, they do not intend to play club Junior or Senior year. If they miss out Senior year HS because of that, oh well. We have been assured he'll make the Varsity team next year, but with out coach that isn't a two year promise.

I get the sense some clubs cut the lower teams to make rosters larger if they need to.

Reading comprehension is lost today. OP specifically said not ECNL.

And probably any varsity team to be honest. To answer your question, yes; most ECNL teams increase their roster size at the hs ages .

My child is a 2011 player and most of the players on the team plan to tryout for high school next year. Do teams (not ECNL) normally increase rosters in the years the kids play high school to account for injuries/absences? I used to think rosters more than 18 weren't great but I'm starting to think having a few extra would actually help. Do clubs increase the numbers once they hit high school?
