Me too. August will be very quiet but that means less crowds. Stay at the Atlantis or another hotel that has a waterpark onsite. There is ice skating and skiing like previous poster suggested, you can do a nighttime desert tour/dinner thing - still hot but bearable. Dubai mall is an entire day if you like shopping (I don't but it can be entertaining). Drive up the coast to Ras Al Khaimah. Go snorkeling (morning or late afternoon). It's definitely worth seeing, even in August. Also, there is big indoor theme park now - IMG park. So much to do for kids that my kids still talk about how much better it was than here ... several years later.
The average temperature in Dubai August is nearly 110 degrees and it's not "dry" heat. It is certainly not "bearable" unless you're a camel.
Millions live in Dubai now and they cope. Complain, yes, but they cope. I've lived through many a Dubai summer. I actually came to rather enjoy it as everything slowed down and there was a certain resilient charm to it. A chilled swimming pool does make all the difference. I used to soak in mine, enjoying the combination of cool water and sultry summer heat.
