There a couple scenarios where it makes sense sending your kid to a magnet schools 1) not a good fit with the local kids and not accepted or bullied 2) you are in a cluster you are not happy with 3) you are all in on sending your higher SES kid to a poorer district to assist with load balancing the school district’s averages 4) you are vigorously working your kids resume for elite colleges and they are not elite in other traditional things like extracurriculars, legacies or wealth. If you don’t hit on one or more of those it isn’t really worth it. If your kid is accepted and well adjusted while flourishing in a strong school why bother ?
1 also happens at magnets. DC would end up with 2 after MS unless accepted at a HS magnet outside of their cluster. 3 🙄 4 is marginal, but there is 5) the magnet, itself, is a fit for DC's interests and abilities, offering programming that DC would relish but that doesn't have a reasonably close equivalent at the local school.
