+1. I live in a ski town, and even though it was really easy to get used ski gear for the kids, we always did seasonal rentals when they were young, because you can swap out during the season if they outgrow their gear. Kids need larger skis and boots pretty much every year, so it makes more sense to rent, rather than buy.

When they reached middle school age and needed better quality skis, we bought them secondhand, but by then, we knew exactly what we wanted for each kid in terms of length, waist, rocker, camber, stiffness etc. Skis have a lot of different metrics - for beginners, don’t bother learning them, just get a beginner ski package. If you buy piecemeal, you are at higher risk for ending up with non beginner friendly gear.
