I do a killer Beef Wellington. People wait for it all year. Sides and desserts change every year, although I am partial to cranberry tart (NYT has a recipe that needs more cranberries but is otherwise good). My husband keeps wanting me to do a yule log, but I am so not good with that sort of thing. I always retort he can try it himself. Which is why we order at Tout de Sweet everytime we decide on a yule log.
Yule logs are very forgiving! You can always make ganache to cover any cracks in the top, then sprinkle with powdered sugar/decorate with meringue mushrooms, frosting "holly" etc.
