I drive a sedan. If SUV’s surround me, I MUST start to back up to be able to see if another vehicle is coming. Yes, I have a back up camera now, but I didn’t always.
If you back into the space you have a clearly defined, small area you need to see into. It positions you closest to the cross traffic of the parking lot and also allows you to drive forward with increased visibility when leaving the space. If you pull forward into the space it sets you up for the least visibility when leaving - cars or SUVs potentially on both sides of you + needing to turn around for an obstructed view backwar, left and right from a position furthest away from traffic lane. With SUVs and hatchbacks, there's an argument for pulling forward into the space because you need clearance for your rear hatch to swing open, but with a sedan that's not the case. Backing into the space is safest for all.
Then you block your access to the trunk if someone else is parked in back of you.
