One of the clubs we Were looking at actually had questions on their registration form asking whether that club was your first choice and what the likelihood is that you would choose that club if you were given an offer. DD wound up not trying out for that one, but those questions did catch my eye. They seemed a bit nosy and it made me wonder whether we’d be held to those answers (probably not?) and it made me wonder whether DD would get more attention at the tryout or less. Did anyone see this same registration form, and what did you think?
What was the club that asked this question? We tried out for three clubs and none of them asked about your approach to a potential offer.
Its completely inappropriate to ask if a club is your first choice on a registration form. There is no good answer to that question. If you say no you are telling the club you will take someone else's offer when you get it. The club asking the question likely won't make you an offer because they know they will either have to wait on you or will never get you. If you say yes and you are a good player you are limiting your options to just one club if you keep your word. If you choose not to go to the club you said yes to, you'll likely never get an offer from them again. If a club is your first choice, its perfectly fine to tell the coach in an email or in person. But its YOUR choice to do that. A club forcing a player to make that statement is no different than asking them "Will you accept an offer if I give it to you?", which is the way some coaches try to get you to commit without ever giving you an offer. Love to know which club was doing it.
